Pisgah Area SORBA Presents Check to US Forest Service Pisgah Ranger District
Rick Schrader - Monday, 13 October 2008

Each year the USFS Pisgah Ranger District holds a volunteer appreciation picnic, and invites those who have volunteered their time to work in the forest. The 2008 picnic, attended by hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers, was held Saturday, September 20th, at the Brevard Music Center. This year, Pisgah Area SORBA turned the tables, and did something extra to show their appreciation for the USFS. PAS President Van Rogers presented a big check for $35,000 to Randy Burgess, Head Ranger of the Pisgah Ranger District. The check represents the cost of 2,058 man-hours donated by PAS volunteers in 2008.

"We at PAS weren't satisfied to show up at the picnic and just enjoy the food and the company. We wanted to let the Forest Service know how much we appreciate our relationship with them. The Big Check was a concrete way of showing them how much we care, how much of ourselves we've shared with them. Randy has given us great opportunities to ride, and in return, we've worked hard to make that possible".

Over 100 volunteers and USFS personnel attended the event. Representing PAS were Van Rogers, Mark Almond, Jerrud Crandall, Shaune Moore, and Woody Keene.

Swank 65
Rick Schrader - Thursday, 25 June 2009

The 11th Annual Swank 65,  Sunday November 8, 2009

The Swank 65 Mountain Bike Journey is mountain bike racing at it’s most primeval, far removed from civilization and polluted air. The race begins at 2500 feet, and consists of a triad of cloverleaf shaped loops winding around Gloucester Gap in Pisgah National Forest.  Rolling over rugged mining roads, fun single track, tough climbs and hell-raising descents, the exhilarating course will test your skills and desire as you explore the devilish terrain of the Pisgah National Forest. 42 miles (65K) in length.

DuPont- SORBA work weekend- July 10-12

Folks,

Time for another weekend filled with fun at DuPont State Forest. The workday is scheduled for Sat. July 11. Free camping in the heart of DSF is available for Fri. and Sat. nights.

We will meet at 9:30 on Sat. for the work project at the Corn Mill Shoals parking area. Folks not camping out are welcomed and can meet the camping crew then.

More details will be posted this week. Have not confimed the work project as of yet, but am wanting to do more road to trail conversion on Pine Tree Trail. This process was started back in March as a workshop that was part of the PTBA Conference:
http://www.trailbuilders.org/confere...adToTrail.html

Plenty of time for riding including Fri. eve, Sat. afternoon and of course a full play day (group ride) on Sunday.

I will post more info as we get closer to the weekend including the gate combo for the back gate for folks wanting to camp.
I need a decent head count of folks planning to work, so please post here if you plan to come. That is very helpful in planning the right amount of work and also tool needs for the project.

As a Sat. night special treat, I will do a slide show on riding in Scotland and Wales. This will happen at dark thirty and be in the barn. Forestry Commission UK is probably doing a better job of trail management for mountain bikes than anywhere I have ever been (and I have been around the block a time or two).

Woody.
