First Dig Day of 2023

On this past Saturday, PAS had our first Dig Day of 2023. Historically, we organize regular public/volunteer work days to give back to the trails in our region beyond our regular maintenance work.
This month, we had 16 volunteers that were a mix of Trail Crew Leaders, Board Members, PAS members, and a couple of new volunteers looking to get involved in trail work. The work the team accomplished was to repair trail tread and control erosion on the junction of Lower Side Hill Connector and Bent Creek Road.
A Turnpike (raised section of trail to allow drainage) was constructed with locust logs harvested in Pisgah National Forest, donated by The Pisgah Conservancy and US Forest Service, and with local gravel supplied by Harrins Sand and Gravel of Asheville. In addition, the trail crew cleared twelve drains and cleaned out debris from the bridge on the trail.
In all, the 16 volunteers provided 57 work hours equating to roughly $1700 in labor costs to the US Forest Service. The work on the Turnpike and clearing drains along the length of Lower Side Hill Connector, will allow for proper drainage from heavy rains and snow over the winter months and beyond.
Thank you to all the volunteers and material providers for helping with this section of the trail. Keep an eye on our Events Calendar and our social media channels for more public work days in the future.
